Topical Anesthetic for laser hair removal

Pain is an expected consequence of many sought-after cosmetic or salon procedures. Getting a tattoo, having hair yanked during waxing, or enduring a laser procedure such as for facial rejuvenation or tattoo removal hurts. Ouch!
It has been proven that the pain of these procedures can be markedly reduced by applying a topical anesthetic containing Lidocaine prior to the procedure. In numerous studies, it has been shown that lidocaine is the most effective topical anesthetic. The FDA has set the limit for the concentration of lidocaine in over-the-counter products at 4% and 5% depending on the site of application. Concentrations higher than 5% are more effective, but, because of potential systemic effects, require a doctor’s prescription.

Lidocaine’s Mode of Action.

Nerves that carry the sensation of pain are located in the dermis. Lidocaine, by preventing the passage of sodium ions, blocks these nerves from carrying impulses stimulated by painful events, such as when getting a tattoo or having a laser applied to the skin.

Topical anesthetics are divided between those that require a doctor’s prescription and those that can be purchased over-the-counter (OTC).
Generally, over the counter numbing creams are used to reduce the pain of non-medical procedures such as before getting a Waxing, waxing, electrolysis and before minor cosmetic procedures, such as BOTOX injections or laser hair removal.
Topical anesthetics that require a doctor’s prescription are reserved for more painful procedures and may have systemic side effects.

Lidocaine has been shown in clinical studies to be the most effective topical anesthetic in reducing the pain of a wide range of cosmetic procedures. Getting a Piercing? First, do your homework

Piercings may not be permanent but they can still cause infections and leave scars, if done incorrectly or not cared for properly.
 Find a reputable piercer. Start by doing some online research about your local market. Then talk to your friends, family, co-worker, schoolmates, anyone who has piercings.

Dermatology – Cosmetic Injection Procedures

 Does BOTOX, Dysport,  Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, or Sculptra, hurt?

The number of cosmetic dermatologic procedures performed in the United States continues to increase every year. The relatively quick and non-invasive nature of injectables such as BOTOX® which prevent the movement of muscles which create frowning and wrinkling, and fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane which add volume to sagging and lined skin, have been a major advance in the anti-aging movement. As the popularity for these procedures rises, so too does the demand for ways to make the injections less painful. Some injectables are being manufactured with low concentrations of the topical anesthetic lidocaine to reduce the discomfort associated with the needles. In actuality, this practice does nothing to decrease the pain of the initial injection and becomes effective only after the procedure is already completed.

The Solution

The use of a topical anesthetic applied to the skin 30-60 minutes before cosmetic injections have been shown to decrease the pain of the needle sticks.
