Pain is an expected consequence of many sought-after cosmetic or salon procedures. Getting a tattoo, having hair yanked during waxing, or enduring a laser procedure such as for facial rejuvenation or tattoo removal hurts. Ouch!It has been proven that the pain of these procedures can be markedly reduced by applying a topical anesthetic containing Lidocaine prior to the procedure. In numerous studies, it has been shown that lidocaine is the most effective topical anesthetic. The FDA has set the limit for the concentration of lidocaine in over-the-counter products at 4% and 5% depending on the site of application. Concentrations higher than 5% are more effective, but, because of potential systemic effects, require a doctor’s prescription.

Lidocaine’s Mode of Action.

Nerves that carry the sensation of pain are located in the dermis. Lidocaine, by preventing the passage of sodium ions, blocks these nerves from carrying impulses stimulated by painful events, such as when getting a tattoo or having a laser applied to the skin.
